Take the Good, Take The Bad

So today I found out that the California Supreme Court has decided that my gay marriage is still legal - only because I got married BEFORE a slim majority of voters decided to vote away the rights of others. Meanwhile, dear friends of mine who were married AFTER election day are instantly divorced. Is this America? I've said this before...human rights should not be left up to a popular vote. My right to marry is not a singing contest or a reality show. Unfortunately the only way to overturn Prop 8 now is another damn ballot measure. Just imagine if all the money that has gone into both sides of this debate was used to help sick or poor people??? It just makes me sick that people who call themselves Christian would rather prevent two people who love each from marrying than feed and clothe people in need. Really, what would Jesus do?

Yes, my friend, this IS America.

Which is precisely why we all should fucking move to Canada.

What would Jesus do? Not sure on that one, but the bible is pretty clear on Gays and Gay relationships, so asking for a quote from Jesus might not help our case.

From everything I have studied, it appears the Supreme Court did not rule on ANY of the substance of prop.8, the case was to determine if Prop.8 constitutes a "revision" or "Amendment" to the state constitution. It was obvious from the opening arguments this was an amendment. The Court has no choice but to follow the law.

Looking at the entire issue, it seems that the Pro Prop.8 groups got to complacent reading polls from the Bay area that had Prop. 8 going down in flames. Had the entire state been looked at, it would have been clear it was going to be a close battle. I'm concerned now that the momentum has been lost and voters in 2010 or 2012 will pull the "no" levers just because they are tired of this issue, like all the budget props. that failed.

Laura, this upsets me too, BUT.... Please don't throw down the "Move to Canada" card. How are folks supposed to react to that? It sounds like you don't like this county ("F-ing move")? How about; "There are one-way plane tickets available, you don't need to announce your move, just do it. If you don't want to be in the US, by all means, leave."

I maintain that human rights should not have been on the ballot in the first place. It sets a frightening precedence. Now that voters have successfully suppressed the rights of one group...who is safe? In that case, I think we should have a ballot initiative to tax churches that get involved with political issues for once an for all - that should fix the budget crisis.

VDT I think you meant "Anti Prop 8 groups got too complacent" - and I agree. I also think most of the TV ads were poorly done.

Laura - I know you really would rather move to Japan than Canada anyhow... :)

It is a frightening precedence, some of my friends just assumed it would be struck down in the courts because it involves basic human rights, little did they know.

I'm all for an initiative to tax churches, hell, that makes 1000% more sense than prop 8! Good question about what's next?

I did mean "Anti Prop 8 groups got too complacent" must have lost my train of thought for a moment, this does seem to be an emotional issue for me as well as others.

Laura, please accept my apology, my comment sounds ugly, I didn't mean it that way. It just frustrates me when people say they want to move from the US when something here doesn't go the way we want. IMHO this is still the best country on the planet (not there's anything wrong with Canada or Japan) I sure hope it stays that way. I fear it wont if all the "Laura's" and "Doug's" move away...
